Hakkımızda
Kariye, eski Yunanca kent dışı (kırsal alan) anlamındaki Khora sözcüğünün Türkçeleşmesidir. V.yüzyılda yapılan şehir surlarından önce sur dışında bir şapelin varlığı bilinmekte olup bu şapelin yerine ilk Khora Kilisesi, Justinianus tarafından (527-565)yeniden yaptırılmıştır. Komnenoslar döneminde Blakhernai Sarayının yakınında olduğu için kilise önemli dini merasimlerde saray şapeli olarak kullanılmıştır.
Latin istilası (1204-1261) sırasında bu kilisede tahrip edilmiş, II. Andronikos (1282-1328) döneminde sarayın Hazine Nazırı Theodoros Metokhites (1313) tarafından onarılan kilisenin kuzeyine bir ek, batısına exonarteks ve güneyine şapel (Parekklesion) eklenmiş, mozaik ve fresklerle bezenmiştir.
Kariye'deki mozaik ve freskler Bizans resim sanatının son dönemine (XIV.yy) ait en güzel örnekleridir. Bu mozaik ve fresklerdeki derinlik figürlerin hareket ve plastik değerlerinin verilişi, figürlerdeki uzamalar bu dönemin üslubudur.
Kariye, 1453 yılında İstanbul'un fethinden sonra kilise olarak kullanılmış, 1511 Vezir Hadım Ali Paşa tarafından camiye çevrilmiştir. 1945 yılında müzeye dönüştürülmüş, 1948-1958 yıllarında Amerikan Bizans Enstitüsü'nün yaptığı restorasyon sırasında mozaik ve freskoların üzeri açılarak ortaya çıkartılmıştır.

Unbelievable and amazing..! History pulls and draws you in if you let it. For a moment I almost felt the presence of the people of Byzantine era. I thought about how they were here before us. This visit might be a spiritually enlightening one. It might broaden your horizons and let you think and feel differently even if only for a few seconds. I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this place.

Would not recommend off season. I understand that it's necessary to restore the church and it's wise to do when there's less traffic but covering the entire thing with plastic and still charging 45TL is absurd (for comparison, the Dolmabache palace was 60TL and it took some two hours to walk through). The inside of the church is still marvelous with its intricate mosaics, but it only takes around 15 minutes to see completely.

A bit out of the touristic area but really worth the detour. An extremely well-preserved Byzantine monument and believe me, the mosaics are just more than beautiful. Don't let the entrance fee stop you. A must-to-do on your list.

The museum it is currently (winter 2019) under partial reconstruction, so it is quite small. The audio guide is a little boring, but does describe what is what. The place looks cool, the mosaics are preserved much better then in Hagia Sofia and have apocryphal plots which are very unique.

When I went this was under renovation the whole building was wrapped up. Lack of captions inside. You probably need to rent a audio guide device if you want to better understand the meaning of mosaics. The mosaics are very beautiful though!
