Pergamon, günümüzde İzmir iline bağlı Bergama ilçesinin merkezinin yerinde kurulu antik kentin adıdır. Pergamon, eski çağlarda Misya bölgesinin önemli merkezlerinden biriydi. MÖ 282-133 arasında da Pergamon Krallığı'nın başkentiydi. Pergamon adı, bir söylence kahramanı olan Pergamos'tan gelir. Pergamos'un, Teuthrania kralını öldürdükten sonra kenti ele geçirdiği ve kendi adını verdiği sanılır. Başka bir söylenceye göre de Teuthrania Kralı Grynos savaşta Pergamos'tan yardım istemiş, zaferden sonra iki kent kurdurarak birine onun onuruna Pergamon, ötekine de Gryneion adını vermiştir. Yazılı belgelerde Pergamon'dan ilk kez MÖ 4. yüzyılın başlarında söz edilir
Kent daha sonra Pergamon Krallığı'nın başkenti olmuştur. Bu dönemde saray, tapınak, tiyatro gibi yapılarla yapılmış, kent kule ve surlarla çevrilmiştir. Pergamon, krallığın Roma'ya bağlanmasından sonra da Batı Anadolu'nun sayılı kentlerinden biri olarak kalmıştır. Eski kentin kalıntılarını, 1870'lerde Batı Anadolu'da demiryolu döşenmesinde çalışan Alman mühendis Carl Humann bulmuştur. Pergamon'da ilk araştırma ve kazı çalışmalarına da 1878'de başlanmıştır. Kazılar ve onarım çalışmaları günümüzde de sürmektedir.
Kentin koruyucusu sayılan akıl ve savaş tanrıçası Athena adına yapılan Athena Tapınağı, Akropol'ün en önemli mekânıdır. Tiyatro terasının üzerinde bulunan bu tapınak, Dor düzeninde yapılmıştır. Kazılarda Athena Tapınağı’nın birçok parçası Berlin'e götürülerek aslına uygun biçimde orada yeniden kurulmuştur. Pergamon'da ise yalnızca temelleri kalmıştır.

The Acropolis occupies an imposing hillside site and, with Asklepion, comprises the ancient city of Pergamon which can claim a number of superlatives: the steepest Hellenistic theatre of Anatolia, the greatest nursing home of Anatolia, the invention of parchment and perhaps most importantly the largest ancient library in Asia Minor. Unfortunately it's stock of books, which included, it is thought, the works of Greek philosophers including Aristotle, were transferred to Alexandria where they were burnt in the conflicts between Mark Antony and Octavius. If this literature had survived how different the history of the western world might have been. Quite apart from this significance, visiting the Acropolis is a great experience.You are transported to the site by means of cable car and you can wander through the area absorbing the unique atmosphere and enjoying the superb views. .

The ancient city is incredible. There are countless things to see in the area. Built at the top of the mountain. It's easy to get there either by cable car or the road. The library and theater were the most impressive places.

A place rich in history. A wonder of how the people in ancient civilisation can built a town that includes a theatre.

Huge place, with so many corners to explore and wander through. You can stay here for hours and still enjoy yourself. Just don't forget your hat, because the sun will burn your nose! I loved it!

Wonderful ancient greek city ruins. The city is really big and some of the buildings are in quite good condition. Theater is specially remarkable, it is really big and shows how important was this city in ancient time. There are also wonderful views of surrounding area as city is located on top of a mountain. You can reach by car to the telepheric base.
