Hakkımızda
Aphrodisias özellikle Roma çağında Aphrodithe tapınımı ile ünlenmiş bayındır bir antik kent, günümüzde ise çok iyi korunmuş anıt yapıları ile Türkiye'nin en önemli Arkeolojik yerlerinden biridir.
Sonraki devirlerde üzerine tiyatro yapılan höyük, M.Ö. 5000'lere kadar giden Prehistorik bir yerleşmedir. M.Ö. 6. yüzyılda Aphrodisias küçük bir köydür. İlk Aphrodithe tapınağı da bu devirde yapılmıştır. Bu görünüm M.Ö. 2. yüzyılda ızgara planlı kentin kuruluşu ile değişmiştir. Bu devirde kentte, yaklaşık bir kilometrelik bir alana yayılmış 15000 civarında insan yaşıyordu.
M.Ö.1. yüzyılda Roma İmparatoru Augustus Aphrodisiası kişisel koruması altına aldı. Bugün ayakta kalan anıtlar ondan sonraki 2 yüzyıl içinde yapıldı. Tiyatro ve Tapınak arasında etrafı sütunlarla çevrili iki meydan planlandı (Tiberius Portikosu ve Agora). Antik dünyanın en iyi korunmuş Stadyumu ise kentin kuzey ucunda yer alıyordu. M.S. 3. yüzyılın sonlarında Aphrodisias Roma İmparatorluğunun Karia Eyaletinin başkenti oldu. M.S. 4 yüzyılın ortalarında da kentin etrafı surla çevrildi. M.S. 6. yüzyıldan itibaren bayındır halini ve önemini kaybetmeye başladı. Aphrodithe Tapınağı kiliseye dönüştürüldü. Küçük bir kasabaya dönen kent 12. yüzyılda tamamen terk edildi.
1961 yılında New York Üniversitesi tarafından başlatılan kazılar günümüzde de sürdürülmektedir.

Excellent collection of archeological findings in a beautiful setting, very carefully made. It is not as famous as Ephesus but definitely maintained and arranged in a better way. There is even much more to excavate still, it is a hidden gem to visit a few times if possible. Better to go in spring or early summer due to high temperatures in July/August.

One of the most important ancient cities in Turkey. Definitely 'a must see' and a hidden gem, between Ephesus and Pamukkale (Hierapolis). The hippodrome, theater and many buildings stands and there are much more to be excavated. The museum which is just by the site is full of 2000 years old Sculptures. An amazing archaeological site Just one negative side, the museum shop is very expensive.

The site of this once thriving Roman city dating back from the 2nd and third century BC is a must-see! Even though the weather wasn't on our side; drizzly and grey, we were in awe of its many wonderful remains. From its amphitheatre to its 30,000-seat stadium, there is something for everyone.

An amazing pocket of history. Don’t leave until you’ve explored every corner of the city. There are surprises at every turn and your first glimpse at each of the locations will give you a real rush. Avoid looking at photographs before you go.... let the Greek and Roman creations surprise you
